DNA Sexing- Poultry & Waterfowl
Know Your Flock — Down to the DNA.
DNA sexing is a laboratory test that determines the sex of a bird — male or female — from a small biological sample, before physical characteristics develop. That early certainty changes everything.
Why It Matters
- Stop feeding and housing cockerels you don't intend to keep
- Confidently build your breeding flock with the right ratio of hens to roosters
- Reduce guesswork on slow-feathering or sex-linked breeds where visual sexing is unreliable
- Make smarter decisions earlier — at hatch, not months later
How It Works
- Collect your sample — blood on paper, freshly plucked feathers, or a dried eggshell membrane (see accepted types below)
- Label & mail it in — clearly mark each sample with the bird's ID and your name, then ship to us
- Get your results — we'll report Male or Female by email or text within 24–48 hours of receiving an acceptable sample
Accepted Sample Types at a Glance
- 🩸 Blood on paper or coffee filter (fully dried)
- 🪶 Freshly plucked feathers with intact quills — 4–6 from chest, tail, or wings (no down or molted feathers)
- 🥚 Eggshell membrane from a recently hatched chick (fully dried)
Pricing: Poultry — $9 per bird | Waterfowl — $10 per bird

Sample Submission

- Blood samples collected on paper or a coffee filter (fully dried)
- Clean, freshly plucked feathers with intact quills (4-6 from the chest, tail or wings. AVOID down feathers & molted feathers)

Turnaround Time
Results are typically provided within 24–48 hours of receiving acceptable samples. Turnaround times may vary based on sample volume, equipment maintenance, holidays, or other unforeseen circumstances.
Inconclusive Results
Occasionally, samples may produce inconclusive results due to insufficient DNA, contamination, poor sample quality, or collection errors.
If a sample is inconclusive, the customer may submit a replacement sample for retesting. Additional fees may apply depending on the circumstances.
Accuracy
DNA sexing is performed using established molecular testing methods and is highly accurate when quality samples are provided. However, no testing method can guarantee 100% accuracy.
Bee Haven Hens Homestead LLC's liability is limited to the amount paid for the test.
Payment
Payment is due at the time samples are submitted unless prior arrangements have been made.
Refund Policy
Because laboratory materials and testing reagents are consumed during the testing process, all DNA sexing fees are non-refundable once testing has begun.
Refunds will not be issued for:
- Customer collection errors
- Contaminated samples
- Insufficient DNA samples
- Delays caused by shipping carriers
Results
Results will be provided by email, text message, or other agreed-upon method and will identify the bird as Male or Female based on the submitted sample.
